Book Analysis (A) True Notebooks by Mark Salzman Part # 1: Questions 1. What did you learn from reading this book? By reading this book, I learned a lot about teenagers’ critical situations at juvenile hall. This book gave me a greater insight and deeper understanding of what their lives are like and the challenges they face in this place. Nathaniel Hall one of the kids in the book True notebooks that were in Mark Salzman’s class stood out to me to me the most because he was showing signs of changing, but he is also manipulative and shows signs of not changing at all, the juvenile system was not effective enough at supporting Nathaniel’s change it failed to bring him up to his high potential, if he had stayed .

True Notebooks has changed the way I think about crime and punishment, I no longer consider the boys in juvenile hall murderers, they are victims of their own circumstances. Before I cracked open this book I thought very little about the boys and girls who were sent to.

Insightful, comic, honest and tragic, True Notebooks is an object lesson in the redemptive power of writing. About the Author: Mark Salzman is the author of Iron & Silk, an account of his two years in China; Lost in Place, a memoir; and the novels The Laughing Sutra, Author: Paul Holland.
